Thermal Duration Electric Assist and Scale SLS Sai...

Steve, and all Club Members,
First, Thanks for setting up this Forum. I'm hoping to spark some interest in the sailplane arena, especially as it relates to Scale Sailplanes of the 3 meter and up class.

I've been flying sailplanes for the last 50 years. That doesn't make me a great pilot, just one that is persistent. All planes have been Thermal Duration planes.

Current planes are:
Ava Pro-E, 125" span with electric assist launch that will take this puppy up fast!
I'm anxious to do it's maiden flight but the Neu 1110/2D P32, 6.7:1 motor failed during bench tests so it's back at Neu being looked at. Far better to fail on the bench rather than during launch! I always burn in my motors before taking out a new plane for it's maiden flight, lesson learned the hard way.

Multiplex Solius - full house and I really like it. Thermals well and is quite inexpensive considering all the fun I'm having with it. Highly recommended.

Calypso - so so plane that's adequate but the two above are far better. Fuse cockpit area of the planes cockpit wall is just way too thin - the slightest hard nose landing and this fuse will be history. That's my biggest complaint about the plane. Also, there is WAY too much flex in the tail that takes away form the ability to fly the plan with a sense of tight control. I'd not buy it again.

Radian - a Great starter plane with a decent wing span. Rudder and Elevator controls only but a very inexpensive plane and a great thermal ship. Put it up with the buzzards and just sit back. If there is any lift, it will catch it.

Goldberg Electra - my trusty old balsa electric. Great thermal plane and a lot of fun to fly. Bought it way back when I had Hair on my Head and it's still going strong!

Now, I've just ordered my first Scale - the LET ASW 28-18 at 3 meter span from Icare up in Canada. Will be electric nose mount for launch. Should be here by the end of January. It's a full house plane with spoilers. IF this goes well, I'll be moving into Scale with SLS (self launch systems) exclusively for future planes.

I would like to get into Aerotow if there is anyone else interested in it, but at the least I'd like to see a group of folks into scale SLS planes develop over the next 6 months.

My direct email is jack@shadowsdancing.com (my personal photography web site).

Hope to hear from all interested!

Jack
